Magic: The Gathering Arena is the computer version of the popular Magic card game released in 1993. In this modern version, you can carry out battles against the AI and between two or more players. Each player controls a different wizard, and each has his own independent deck of cards. One of the best features of Magic: The Gathering Arena is that its AI increases in difficulty in a linear and predictable way. You start from the most basic notions of attack, defense, and collecting mana, with the complexity of the levels gradually increasing as you defeat enemies. Your enemies increase in number, as well as in their ability to do damage. At the start of each game, players start with the same life points. Your objective is to damage your opponent until his counter hits zero. Of course, you'll need to be wary of his attacks, because if you don't defend and protect yourself, he can inflict a lot of damage, even if you have to sacrifice cards along the way. In Magic: The Gathering Arena, you can unlock 15 unique decks, each of which can be suited to your style of play. If you play every day, you'll earn rewards to help you expand your collection more easily. Once you've mastered the AI and the main game mechanics, you can start fighting against real people. So, if you want to enjoy the full Magic card experience on your computer, don't hesitate to download Magic: The Gathering Arena.

You can choose to be in any of the five continents and in dozen of different countries. Once you have chosen where you want to start, you need a name for your businessman and, more importantly, a name and a logo for your company. King of Dragon Pass is a role-playing, strategy, management and adventure game set in Glorantha (the world of HeroQuest and RuneQuest), where you have to guide your clan on the good path, whether that means crushing all of your enemies or simply peacefully surviving. The game is divided in several parts with distinct mechanics. For example, you'll pass a bit of time managing relations between your clan and neighboring clans, which can be done through a series of pretty intuitive menus where you can choose exactly what you want to do. However, it will also be common that you'll go through events that you'll have to resolve with classic games of "choose your own adventure": choosing the option that you consider correct from a series of possibilities. The best part of the game, of course, is the enormous quantity of background behind the story that it tells, which if your English is good enough will amaze you. As you can see from the images, the game doesn't have traditionally "outstanding graphics", but that everything is made up of static illustrations. The style used, of course, is not only quite good, but it also perfectly fits with the feel of the game. King of Dragon Pass is a great game that is independently capable of giving you hours and hours of fun. Of course, you will need a good knowledge of English and a lot of patience to enjoy it, as it is not a very accessible game.

Other features that can be edited are: the number of stars, the age, or planets' density. Combine natural and human resources, feed your troops, and build buildings and spaceships. Galactic Civilizations II

Stardock

3 (637)

Galactic Civilizations II is a turn-based strategy game where your aim is to bring your race total domination over the galaxy by any means possible. In other words, it's very similar to the Civilization saga except on a much bigger scale. The first thing to do is decide which race to begin playing with. Obviously you can choose humans, but you'll find more than a dozen different options available, each with its respective advantages and inconveniences. Also, in case none of them is convincing, you can always create your own race from scratch. Once you have your empire, it'll be time to start on your conquest. This process might (and should) be pretty slow. Depending on your playing style, you might be interested in building a fleet of formidable spaceships that you can use to flatten enemies, make friends with the other races in order to win a political victory, or simply evolve enough to leave all the others behind. Regardless of your approach to the game, each round will be different from the previous one. This is in part due to the huge number of variables you can play with, which range from building different structures on your planets or establishing interplanetary commercial routes to discovering ancient ruins or making unexpected advances in the technology tree. Galactic Civilizations II is an enormous and very dense strategy game. Before you start playing, it's not just advisable but probably crucial to read the instruction manual and watch tutorials of the game. It'll be worth your while once you get the hang of it, though.

Micronations is a 3D strategy and management game where players have to build their own city starting basically from scratch. You start with nothing more than a house, and on it you'll have to expand your domain. Players have dozens of elements available for expanding their city. The first and most basic are highways, of which you'll have different types depending on where you want to construct them. Once you've created a good network of roads you can start raising all types of buildings: different kinds of housing, leisure venues, shopping malls, farms, and offices buildings. You can build all these buildings and elements with just a click of the mouse. And maybe this is Micronations' main problem: that building anything new is no harder than clicking on a free space on the map. Micronations is a very entertaining real-time management game that also includes very solid 3D graphics. Its main problem is that it doesn't have well-defined playability, meaning there are no objectives for winning... nor any possibility of losing.

UnCiv is an open source turn-based strategy game that's based on the brilliant Civilization franchise (or, more specifically, on the saga's fifth installment). The game, as the screenshots show, has graphics closer to that of the second or third installment, but as soon as you start playing, you'll recognize almost all the controls and concepts from the fifth one (which is still very popular to this day). Your mission in UnCiv is to create the best civilization in history by founding cities, managing your resources, eliminating threats, and using diplomacy. When you start a new game, it's a good idea to start by exploring your surroundings to recognize the nearest threats and the best opportunities. After that, try to expand your territory and, over time, create a prosperous empire. Needless to say, UnCiv is a relatively complex game that, while familiar to any veteran of the Civilization saga, may be somewhat complicated for those who have never played any of its installments. Players have to manage concepts and controls as diverse as diplomacy with other civilizations, the technology tree, the development of cities, the adoption of new policies, and much more. Fortunately, the game has a tutorial to guide you through all these processes. UnCiv is a great open source version of a classic video game. This is a completely free and ad-free game that will delight fans of the genre. In a nutshell, this is an absolutely outstanding title that takes up only 80MB and can be played on virtually any modern computer. It's a real treat for fans of turn-based strategy and 4X.

atWar

4 (601)

atWar is a turn-based strategy game along the lines of Risk and Civilization in which you have to conquer your rivals using Planet Earth as your battlefield. That said, there are lots of different maps in different sizes (the whole world, Asia, Europe, USA, etc.), which gives the game a good amount of variety. In contrast to other games like Risk, your units move freely over the map depending on their movement range, not by blocks. This means that while an infantry unit can take several turns to get from one point to the other, planes will take just one. Battles are carried out in simultaneous turns, so no side has an advantage. This is very important if you consider that atWar is played on the Internet against people from all over the world in turns that can take from two minutes to 24 hours. Thanks to this simultaneous turns system, you can organize battles that can last from a couple of hours (short turns of just a few minutes), to wars that can be prolonged for weeks (turns that take up an entire day). Apart from all the maps that are available from the beginning, the game has an editor that lets you create new maps and units (although there are already hundreds of them available). Thanks to this, the possibilities are almost endless. atWar is an outstanding turn-based strategy game. Although it can seem complicated at first, it has enough depth to satisfy the most demanding fans of turn-based strategy.

Teleglitch is a roguelike quite different from those you're probably used to in this genre in that gameplay does not happen in turns nor are the graphics created from text. That said, its hellish level of difficulty and the randomness of its scenes will prove its primary identifying features. The game is set in an abandoned military base whose only inhabitants are the main character, armed with a simple pistol and very few bullets, as well as loads of bloodthirsty creatures that won't think twice about flinging themselves at you to kill you. Your aim is to escape from the complex, composed of 10 random levels that will get increasingly difficult. Luckily in Teleglitch you'll have an arsenal of more than 40 weapons or objects to help you get out alive. The best thing about these objects, in fact, is that you can combine to create new weapons. That is, you can create your own defenses with the junk you find on the scene. Teleglitch is a frenetic game combining roleplay with horror and intense action. That said, the game is very hard and might not appeal to all audiences.

From that point on, your mission is to infiltrate an enemy base, which is protected by lots of soldiers, security cameras, mechanized devices ... and scientists. Your most important move consists of knocking down enemies (from behind), and then disguising with their outfits. Like this you can remain unseen in most situations, although you still have to be careful with some of the electronic devices. The most important thing, on the other hand, is to avoid the enemy's field of vision while you hack computers, which is another important part of the game.
