Apart from planning your strategy, you can make alliances to help you move forward in your conquest by joining forces with other kingdoms. Developing your own strategy implies going into the woods, hills, and plains to take full advantage of them and adapt your strategy to your needs.

StoryBook Tactics

Laughing Fox Games

2 (607)

StoryBook Tactics is a turn-based SRPG where you play a group of adventurers whose aim is to save the world from the attack of an evil necromancer, who's converted a large majority of adventurers to his cause. To this end, you'll have to use this reduced group of intrepid cubes (the character design is certainly odd) and plunge into your adventure. The gameplay is the classic one for SRPGs: you can move your group around a world map and, every time you get to a new zone, you have to participate in a battle. In these battles, which are the heart of the game, you have to fight tons of different enemies who try to end your heroes' lives. As you continue winning your characters will improve ... until you finally face off against the necromancer. StoryBook Tactics is a very fun game that, despite its outdated graphics, offers an entertaining enough gameplay to keep you hooked for hours. In fact, it's an Xbox Live Arcade game that's come to PC and is absolutely free.

The Battle for Wesnoth

3 (870)

The Battle for Wesnoth is a completely free project created in 2003 by David White, in collaboration with more than 50 people throughout the years, which remains in constant development. It is a strategic turn-based game on a grid set in medieval times in the imaginary land of Wesnoth. The game was originally inspired by 16-bit games of the genre, such as Master of Monsters, Shining Force, or Warsong, although with time many game modes, units, and stories have been added, so it now has an incredible amount of content. The gameplay consists of moving your troops through a set divided in a grid with different types of terrain and geographic elements that require some strategic thinking. Your army is formed by different types of characters, each one with special abilities. Depending on the campaign you are playing and what point in the story you are in, you can make them level up and recruit new units as you encounter or rescue them. These units cost money to maintain, so you'll have to manage your resources with care as you advance in each story. Still, the game's rules will depend on what campaign you are playing. Besides more than fifteen available campaigns, the game also lets you play multiplayer matches on local networks and on LAN, making The Battle for Wesnoth a comprehensive strategy game in constant growth and development, which is now considered one of the icons of freeware games for PC.

MegaGlest is a free, open-source strategy game that takes place in real time and is set in a fantasy world where seven large factions are constantly at war. These factions (the wizards, the technocrats, the Indians, the Romans, the Nordics, the Persians, and the Egyptians) have to face one another constantly on the battlefield to fight for the dominance of their respective cultures. Each faction has its own variety of buildings and exclusive units, along with its own advantages and disadvantages with respect to the other factions. When starting each battle, your main objective is to try to find and collect as many resources as possible. These resources are split into energy, stone, wood, and food, and are absolutely necessary to construct different buildings and units that can be developed throughout the game. You have to be especially careful when investing resources, since they're limited. A series of bad decisions might lead you to inevitable defeat at the hands of your enemies. MegaGlest is a very detailed real-time strategy game that continues in the footsteps of the legendary (but discontinued) Glest, offering a similar experience where planning and war instincts take precedence over ability and reflexes.

Airmech is an action strategy game with a gameplay that is very similar to the one on DOTA (Defense of the Ancients), only the magic and swords fantasy setting is now replaced with a very different setting in which the protagonists are giant robots which can transform themselves at any time. You’ll get to participate in quick battles which barley last a few minutes and in which strategy and action are at the service of skill and quick thinking, to provide you with a truly exciting experience. Just as with DOTA or LOL, at the beginning of the game you'll have to choose between the different types of Airmechs available, as well as the different types of infantry units. Each one comes with its own set of abilities, so it’s really important to choose the one that best suits how you play. Visually, Airmech is amazing; and not because it has the best models, or textures, but because it uses a 'cell-shading' art design that is reminiscent of Borderland and which fits in perfectly with the game's setting. Airmech is a fun and action-packed game that not only offers a nearly endless online playing experience, but does so completely for free. You can buy new Airmechs and improvements if you want, but you won’t have to dig into your pockets in order to start enjoying the game.

Deadbuild is a game that includes various elements normally found in realtime strategy with a 'tower defense' game, all of which is then mixed up with zombies. A typical tower defense game involves creating units and towers to stop enemies from arriving and attacking your base. In Deadbuild, however, this is just one part of the game. During the day, your mission is to use your hero and the different units you create to find resources and improve the landscape to your advantage. Later, when night falls, the zombies arrive. That's when you need to do your best to fend off their attack. And, to make things even more complicated, some of the special zombies don't come by the normal route - they take a shortcut. Deadbuild has an extensive campaign mode that allows you to choose between three different characters and follow an established storyline. It also includes battle mode, which you can play to instantly enjoy the tower defense aspect of the game. Deadbuild is a different tower defense, and an original and fun game despite its mediocre graphics.

Unlike chess, moving your characters in this game is easy: you can move as many squares as you want, either vertically or horizontally, but if you run into an obstacle, you'll have to wait a turn before you can pass it. Kill enemy solders by moving your soldiers onto the same square, and whoever gets the key to the castle wins. Castle Conquest has three levels of difficulty to ensure enough of a challenge without causing too much frustration, which makes this the perfect game for just about anyone.

Scrolls is a game that combines the best of trading card games (TCGs) with the best of board games. The result is a unique title in which players can battle others from around the world in duels where good strategy will always prevail. Gameplay on Scrolls is an interesting hybrid where players control a hand of cards that are played on a board. The aim of each duel is to destroy your opponent's totems (located at the end of the board), which will require you to play the various creatures you might have in your hand. Each turn, players can sacrifice a card either to get an additional point of mana (used to play the cards), or to draw two new ones. These options have both benefits and drawbacks, so you'll need to consider them carefully before acting. In Scrolls there are over 350 different cards (well, scrolls, actually), each with its own design and representation on the board, and, of course, its own attributes. Some cards let you summon creatures and others cast spells to power up your game. Scrolls is an excellent and very polished game where the hand of Mojang (the creators of Minecraft) is quite notable. The card-based duels are quite dynamic and fun, and you can even play online against other players or enjoy challenges and single-player missions.

Prime World is a MOBA game in 3D that combines elements of roleplaying and realtime strategy to deliver a gaming experience similar to genre classics like League of Legends and DOTA2, with a few additions that make it unique. In Prime World you'll not only participate in combat, but also manage your own castle. Within the castle, you'll need to build different structures that will give you access to resources and new talents (special abilities found in the game). Now, managing your castle is not the main task in the game, which is the war between the two factions of the Prime World universe. Players can choose between joining the Imperio of Dokht, defenders of technology, or the Keepers of Adornia, who have magical powers. Combat plays out in real time, just like in any other MOBA. In other words, your objective is to finish off all of your enemies by using the different skills you've gained and by collaborating with various characters. Combat can be 3V3 or 4V4. Some features that set Prime World apart from other, similar titles include the constant development of your characters, and the ability to participate in battles along a determined storyline. Prime World is an excellent MOBA that not only provides the genre a breath of fresh air, but is given to you completely free and with spectacular graphics.

Dungeon Colony is a strategy game in real time where you take on the role of the Dungeon Lord, who has to try to explore the nearby caverns with the help of his loyal minions and, over all, save his dungeon from destruction. The game mechanics are relatively similar to those of Dungeon Keeper. The only difference is that, instead of controlling an omnipresent being, you can only control your demonic lord directly. Other than that, it's quite similar: your troops can carry out tasks such as setting traps, mining resources or attacking enemies, and they will receive a wage for doing so. You, on the other hand, can create all kinds of elements, as long as you use the appropriate materials and diagrams to do so. You can create things that range from torches to traps, including doors or shelves of books to teach your creatures. Dungeon Colony is an excellent strategy game with complex and very fun mechanics, as well as very nice graphics. In the end, it's like a modern version of Dungeon Keeper with some extra splashes of action.

The gameplay in Open Fodder is identical to that of the original game. On the left of the screen is a list of all your soldiers, with their rank and the weapons they can use. All you have to do is left-click on any part of the map to move them around, and just right-click to shoot. And little else. Like this, you can go about exploring the different levels in the game and destroying all the enemies. As previously mentioned, the default version of Open Fodder includes four demos that will give you a taste of the full experience of the original game. But, like with many upgrades of older game engines, you will need to extract the original game files to play the main campaign. Luckily, this is very easy to do nowadays, as the game is sold for a reasonable price on some digital platforms. Open Fodder is one of the best ways to enjoy the Cannon Fodder experience on modern computers. The game is still just as fun and fast-paced as day one and, thanks to this upgrade, it now has improved visuals.

Gameplay is divided into two main stages. In the first one, you'll have to manage all the resources available to you, research, and go through countless menus in what is definitely the pure management-strategy part of the game. In the second stage you'll go straight to the battlefield, where you'll control a squad of humans to face the invading troops in a way that is typical of turn-based strategy games like Jagged Alliance and X-Com. The game’s graphics provide a very peculiar look, with very detailed pixelated models and great visuals that fit in perfectly with the setting. The only part where they have some room for improvement are in the special effects, such as explosions and fire, yet even here the results are quite decent. Xenonauts is a great strategy game that won’t just appeal to X-Com die-hard fans, but also to fans of turn-based strategy games in general.
