0 A.D.

Wildfire Games

4 (732)

0 A.D. is a real time strategy game focused on empire building and war at different points throughout history. It is clearly inspired by 'Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings', which is arguably one of the best titles ever in the genre. The game unfolds in 0 A.D. in exactly the same way as 'Age of Empires II'. That is, you start with a few villagers and a scouting unit, and your goal is to build a great powerful city full of new buildings and strong defences. This will then become your base from where you must expand, build alliances and annihilate your opponents. To build your city, improve it, and build an army, you need resources. Meat, stone, wood and metal are the main ones that you must always have in plentiful supply in order to keep your villagers working. In 0 A.D. you can play as nine different civilizations, including the Greeks, Romans, Persians and Britons. Each one has its own buildings, its own advantages, and its own military units. Everything has been customized with great care and attention to make each civilisation as historically accurate as possible. Although 0 A.D. started out as an 'Age of Empires II: The Age of Kings' clone, it soon evolved into a standalone game with its own graphics engine. And it shows. 0 A.D. is very strong visually, and gets much closer to the third instalment of the 'Age of Empires' franchise. 0 A.D. is an outstanding real time strategy game that is open source and free to play. Furthermore, despite being in the very early stages of development, it already offers a far superior gaming experience to many commercial titles.

Azgard Defence

Azgard Defence is a strategy game where your objective is to stop the advance of tons of monsters by placing defense towers along the path that leads to your castle. The game may seem simple, but it really draws you in, since it's easy to stop the monsters at the beginning of the game, but that task becomes increasingly more difficult as you continue playing. You can use various towers with different types of attack to defend your castle, and upgrade their attacks to make them more powerful. There is also a good amount of variety in the types of monsters that come up from below the earth, and many of them are more affected by certain attacks than others, so you need to think strategically when placing your towers if you want to be successful.

Chess Rush

Tencent Games

5 (1058)

Chess Rush is openly inspired by the excellent 'Dota Auto Chess' — as well as a slew of other similar chess games. Here, you face off in epic strategic chess battles in real-time. Your aim? Defeat wave after wave of enemy raids until you've thrashed each of your successive opponents and gain a highly coveted spot on the game's online scoreboard. Combat systems in Chess Rush are far simpler than what initially meets the eye. In fact, Chess Rush is divided up into two distinct phases. First, you must purchase new units and situate them strategically on the battlefield — chess board. From there, the second phase consists of essentially, just watching as the combat in each match unfolds. Depending on the result of these clashes (most won't last much longer than a couple seconds) you get a larger bounty of coins, or not. Use those coins to access new troops or build on the ones you already have. From there, you start out in a new round of chess battles. The higher your score at the end of each round, the more likely it is that you'll win the match. In Chess Rush there are a whopping 50 different characters to choose from. Each of them has particular attributes and special attack skills for you to summon from them at precisely the right time to your best strategic advantage. Many, if not all, of your troops' attack skills allow you to synergize your moves with a specific character. Meaning, you need to mix up exactly the right combo in order to win the hardest battles. Another important element to keep in mind is that if you arrange to get three of the same class of heroes, you can fuse them together to create a more powerful unit. Chess Rush for Windows is the Android version of the game, integrated into the Tencent emulator. That's not to say that the game doesn't also have outstanding visuals and works perfectly on mid-range PCs. All in all, this title is another excellent game for you to play for hours and hours.

Dungeon Door

The Dynamic Gorilla Team

Dungeon Door is a turn-based strategy game where you control a group of anthropomorphic adventurers: a panda warrior, a rabbit archer, a hedgehog wizard, and an otter thief. They are trying to steal treasure from a dungeon, fighting all the enemy creatures they meet inside. The combat system is turn-based and very similar to other games like Final Fantasy Tactics and Disgaea. Each character has its own abilities, strengths, and weaknesses. The warrior, for example, can block attacks to minimize damage. The wizard, on the other hand, can teleport from one place to another and cast harmful spells from a distance. The game has a fairly simple story with a very short plot, but it makes up for this with detailed graphics that show off the modeling and drawing of each character. Dungeon Door is a fun role-playing and strategy game that fans of SRPG will especially enjoy, given that there aren't too many options like this for PCs.

Warhammer: Chaos & Conquest

Tilting Point

Warhammer: Chaos & Conquest is an online strategy and management game set in the Warhammer Fantasy universe, specifically in the Old World, a continent ruled mainly by human armies. That said, in this game, you aren't leading a human army but one of the many armies of Chaos. The gameplay in Warhammer: Chaos & Conquest is very similar to other online management titles available mainly for Android operating systems. Your main objective, especially during the game's early stages, is to build an empire by constructing all kinds of structures, such as barracks capable of housing all your units. The stronger your empire, the mightier your armies, and the more the humans will fear you. In total, in Warhammer: Chaos & Conquest, you can recruit more than 20 different Chaos demons, many of them old acquaintances from the miniatures game, as well as more than a dozen Chaos warriors. You can also choose which Chaos god you want to serve: Khorne, Nurgle, Tzeentch, or Slaanesh. And, of course, depending on which of the four you choose, you can use special units and spells. Each Great Demon has its advantages and shortcomings, so you'll have to weigh this decision very carefully. Warhammer: Chaos & Conquest is an online strategy game that offers relatively traditional gameplay for this genre, with lots of small missions to gain experience and level up. As usual, this game allows you to forge alliances with other players online by multiplying your armies and collaborating with your allies.

Wakfu is a massive multiplayer online role-playing game with touches of turn-based strategy, in which you form part of a lively ecosystem where your actions have long-lasting consequences and your decisions could directly affect other players. The combat system, unlike in many other MMORPGS, is turn-based. Players have action points, movement points, and Wafku points that they can use however they want with each turn. Its most obvious references are games like Final Fantasy Tactics and the Fire Emblem saga. Although combat is a very important aspect of Wakfu, it's far from being the only thing you can do. The politics of the World of Twelve are run by the players, who take turns on a weekly basis holding important positions such as governor of one of the kingdoms. Due to these political changes, players have the possibility to take their kingdom to war against another ... or create an era of peace with laws that strictly prohibit attacking other players. Another interesting feature is that there is no 'respawn' option for creatures. You must 're-plant' any creature that is destroyed ... if you don't, they'll become extinct, for good. Wakfu is a unique MMORPG that offers enchanting graphics (as you can see in the screen shots), along with a rich, deep, and very fun gameplay experience.

Arena of Heroes

2 (1076)

Arena of Heroes is an interesting mix of genres that combines gameplay tradition to MOBA games (like League of Legends or DOTA 2) with the tactical planning required in turn-based strategy games. Like in all MOBA games, the objective of each round is to destroy the enemy's base. And you have to perform this task with a group of up to four heroes, who will be facing off against another group of four trying to take down your own base. The main difference between Arena of Heroes and other games in the same genre is that your battles, instead of taking place in chaotic real time, are turn-based. That means that first you decide what move you want your hero to make, then its minions will move automatically - and then it's your opponent's turn. When you play Arena of Heroes you'll have a minimum of four playable characters each week (two fixed and two rotating). And you can also buy access to additional characters, with 12 different ones available in all. As you play and win battles, you'll also win money, gems, and fame, all of which you can use to improve your characters' abilities, making them more powerful so that they can participate in more intense battles. Arena of Heroes is a fun genre hybrid that will satisfy fans of MOBA who want to try something new, as well as hardcore turn-based strategy players who are looking for a different angle.

Gameplay in Heroes of the Storm will be familiar to anyone who's played LOL or DOTA 2: several players fight in teams on the Internet, in duels of normally no longer than 15 minutes. Zafehouse Diaries is a strange video game that mixes elements from traditional board games and the role-playing games that have been around forever with a very successful zombie setting where your goal is to survive. On the one hand, Zafehouse Diaries presents you with an adventure where the main scene is nothing other than a game board. The board is of a house, to be more precise, but in the end it's a game board. You have to move your different characters around the board in order to find resources and secure your position. Of course, in addition to this traditional board game setup (which is even more apparent due to the fact that your characters are represented by game pieces), there is also a lot of role-playing content in Zafehouse Diaries. Each character has his or her own characteristics or attributes, and even the story that you create influences the game a lot. Zafehouse Diaries is a unique experience that does an exceptional job of combining genres to offer a fun video game that you will want to play again and again.
