Vagante

Nuke Nine

2 (961)

Vagante is a roguelike in 2D in the style of Spelunky in which you control an adventurer whose objective is to find the treasures hidden inside a deadly dungeon. In the beginning, you have to choose between one of two characters: a warrior, who is stronger but less versatile; or an archer, who is less strong but can attack from a distance. Depending on the type of hero you choose, you'll have different abilities available. Once inside the dungeon, you have to face many dangers. There are dozens of enemies of all kinds, like bats, assassins, gel balls, orcs, and more. Each enemy has a specific behavior and set of attributes, so you have to know the right way to avoid or attack them. Besides the enemies, in Vagante, you also have to look for traps. Spikes, for instance, can kill you instantly if you fall on them, not to the mention monster mouths hidden under the ground. Fortunately, you'll also find some friends inside the dungeon. The merchants will let you spend your money, for example, to buy new weapons and potions, so you have to be careful not to attack them. Vagante is a really good roguelike in 2D. The best thing that can be said about it is that it is a perfect combination of Spelunky and Castlevania.

Mojang

Scrolls is a game that combines the best of trading card games (TCGs) with the best of board games. The result is a unique title in which players can battle others from around the world in duels where good strategy will always prevail. Gameplay on Scrolls is an interesting hybrid where players control a hand of cards that are played on a board. The aim of each duel is to destroy your opponent's totems (located at the end of the board), which will require you to play the various creatures you might have in your hand. Each turn, players can sacrifice a card either to get an additional point of mana (used to play the cards), or to draw two new ones. These options have both benefits and drawbacks, so you'll need to consider them carefully before acting. In Scrolls there are over 350 different cards (well, scrolls, actually), each with its own design and representation on the board, and, of course, its own attributes. Some cards let you summon creatures and others cast spells to power up your game. Scrolls is an excellent and very polished game where the hand of Mojang (the creators of Minecraft) is quite notable. The card-based duels are quite dynamic and fun, and you can even play online against other players or enjoy challenges and single-player missions.

Zorbus (Legacy Version) is a traditional-style roguelike where you delve into the depths of a randomly-generated dungeon as you try to find a portal to the mythical world of Zorbus (Legacy Version), a place where a simple mortal can transform into a deity. Gameplay in Zorbus (Legacy Version) is typical for the genre. With a numerical keyboard, you can move your character freely around the dungeon, attacking by moving onto the same square as an enemy. From the options menu, you can see all the available commands and change them if you like. Each time you start a new game, as in most roguelikes, the scenario is generated randomly. This way, you'll never play the same game twice. The dungeons in Zorbus (Legacy Version) are inhabited by creatures with artificial intelligence, which causes them to either run away, look for back up, or pursue you tirelessly, depending on the situation. Zorbus (Legacy Version) is an excellent old-school roguelike with an elegant and clean look, gameplay inspired by D20 but with its own personality, and infinite dungeons to loot if only you can stay alive.

Umoria is a version of the 1983 classic roguelike, The Dungeons of Moria, adapted to modern operating systems. With this app, you experience this founding father of the genre, in a way that isn’t far off from the one designed decades ago. In Umoria, you start your adventure in a small town where you can get your hands on all kinds of supplies, as well as weapons, food, armor and more. Once you think you’re ready, just make your way down the stairs to the first level of the Moria caverns. So, what's your goal? Descend to the deepest part of the dungeon to destroy the dreaded Balrog for once and for all. As usual in this genre, gameplay in Umoria is relatively complex. In other words, you have tons of controls at your disposal, and you have to figure how to walk down the stairs, light torches, and look both ways, among other things. Luckily, clicking on ‘?’ gives you a complete list of the controls. The length of Umoria games varies greatly. Ideally, a game should last several hours, however, typically, their duration is much shorter (especially during your first games). It’s not even uncommon for your poor adventurers to die from a kobold beating if they’re lucky... Or to get squished by a trap.

Lost Labyrinth DX

3 (504)

Lost Labyrinth DX is a traditional roguelike where you explore the depths of a procedurally-generated dungeon. Your objective is to get as far as you can before a monster or a trap inevitably kills you. Like other popular coffeebreak roguelikes, each game lasts somewhere between 15 and 30 minutes. Maybe a little longer if you're lucky. As usual, before you start a new game, you can choose from hundreds of different skills to customize your hero. Each set of skills enables you to play in a new way by creating characters like archmages, barbarians, paladins, rogues, and more. When you play with a magical character, for example, the experience is different than when you play with a more combative one. Once you've created your character, you can dive into the action. Unlike most games in this genre, in Lost Labyrinth DX, you don't gain experience by killing enemies but by advancing through levels, so sometimes it's smarter to dodge enemies than to kill them. So the deeper you make it into the dungeon, the more your skills improve. And again, you'll have hundreds of skills and spells at your disposal. Lost Labyrinth DX is a super fun roguelike that lets you play quick rounds whenever you want. In addition, although the game has nice and modern graphics, you can also play a more traditional ASCII version that's sure to delight purists.

Space Funeral is a unique RPG created with RPG Maker 2003, in which you can play come of the oddest adventures ever seen on an RPG. Believe it or not, the creators of the RPG masterpiece Undertale got some inspiration from this bizarre game. Start a new game in Space Funeral, and you might have to take a few moments to get familiar with your new surroundings. The entire world has been overtaken by strange, blood-covered creatures, and it's up to you to help Philip and his faithful companion Leg Horse as they journey to the City of Forms to try and restore this world to its former glory. The battles in Space Funeral play out like most turn-based RPGs: you'll use Philip's attacks and skills to defeat enemies. Thankfully the enemies don't appear randomly but instead are scattered throughout the level, which makes it possible to avoid them if you want. Playing Space Funeral is quite an experience, as it defies the genre's common tropes and creates a parody of role-playing games and horror games. There's certainly no other game created by RPG Maker like it.

The Temple of Torment

3 (906)

The Temple of Torment is an open-world roguelike that, in the words of its developer, could be described as a cross between Diablo, Dungeons & Dragons and ADOM. In addition, some of the genre's unique features, such as permanent death, can be disabled from the options menu. The controls in The Temple of Torment are much more accessible than that of the classic 'roguelike', since you can use the mouse to carry out almost any action. Of course, you can also use the keyboard if you want or combine keyboard and mouse (the most recommended option). In the same way, although by default you will enjoy a quite nice tileset, you will be able to deactivate it and play it with ASCII aesthetics. One of the most fun aspects of The Temple of Torment is that, like ADOM or ToME, you will have total freedom to move around the world as you please. Depending on where you go or the locations you enter, you will be able to accept different missions. And of course, every time you start a new game, the geography of the world will change radically. At the beginning you will be able to create your character by choosing between 15 different classes, and depending on which one you choose, you will be able to access more than a hundred different skills and spells. If you do not want to spend too much time creating your hero, you can also automate this process. The Temple of Torment is an outstanding open-world roguelike that rubs shoulders with titles of the caliber of ToME or ADOM on its own merits. The default tileset that comes installed by default is also beautiful and charming.

Everything Is Fodder is a traditional-style 'roguelike' that has you delve into the depths of a dungeon. Your one and only goal is to kill Ba'zlbub, the king of the demons. That said, killing him isn't going to be enough -- you also have to bring his heart back to the surface in order to complete a ritual. The gameplay in Everything Is Fodder is typical for the genre, using turn-based combat and movement. When you touch the question mark key on your keyboard, you can get a complete list of commands with all the actions that you can complete. When you press the 'X' for example, you can look at any element in the setting, and get a detailed description of it. One of the most original aspects of the gameplay in Everything Is Fodder is its magic system that lets you transform different elements in the settings that will let you cast spells. It's essential that you learn to master the magic in order to reach the evil Ba'zlbub. And once you see him, you probably won't see anything else. Everything Is Fodder is an old-school 'roguelike' in every way: the storyline, gameplay, and graphics are all reminiscent of the big classics of the genre.

Kepler452b is a futuristic-looking 'roguelike' set in a space station located near the planet Kepler-452b -- a little over 1,800 light years from earth. Your mission is to find the four keys necessary for returning home. The gameplay in Kepler452b covers all the bases of the genre. All the action takes place by turns, the settings are randomly generated in each round, your character's death is permanent, and the difficulty level is pretty high. This is all in addition to the fact that you have to do everything exclusively using the keyboard. One very interesting element in Kepler452b is that there are various conditions for victory and several different endings, something that's unique for the genre. If you get the four keys but you don't get all the 'intel,' you'll get the first ending. If you get all the 'intel,' you'll get the second ending. If you manage to escape without the four keys you'll get the third ending. You can only see the fourth ending if you completely clear the last level of the game. Kepler452b is an excellent, 'roguelike' with a traditional feel. It offers at atmosphere that's relatively uncommon within the genre, with a classic (but very straightforward) control system, and simple yet elegant graphics.

To be more exact, this game takes place during the Fourth Age, when Morgoth is still alive and at large. In fact, as in Angband, you'll come face to face with Morgoth himself. The first thing you have to do before entering Middle Earth is create your hero. It's important to keep in mind that you don't have to register to play. But you'll need to choose a username and password. After that, you can create your hero by choosing between dozens of different races and classes, including human, dwarf, semi-troll, warrior, rogue, explorer, and more. You'll have hundreds of combinations at your disposal. Once you've created your character, you'll discover that Tangaria is a roguelike with a huge and totally open world. The adventure isn't linear, so you can do whatever you want, including exploring the world, talking to NPCs and other players, traveling through dungeons, and much more. In fact, the dungeons are destructible: with the right spell, you can destroy practically anything you find. One of the most unique aspects of Tangaria is its multiplayer component. On one hand, there's the classic PVE, which lets you create your own Fellowship of the Ring with other players with whom you can fight evil side by side. On the other hand, there's also PVP, where you can fight against other players in exciting battles to the death. Tangaria is a truly unique experience that combines the best of roguelikes and MMORPGs, despite their differences. It's worth mentioning that this is a challenging game, and you'll have to spend at least an hour learning the controls and some of the more complex gameplay.

Space Station 14

Space Station 14 is a free, open-code remake of the legendary Space Station 13, an MMORPG where players take on the role of the different members of a space station crew. This remake lets you enjoy a similar gaming experience to that of the original, but it was built from scratch using a specific motor. In practical terms, this means that this version of the game is more stable and more compatible, with some lightly refined mechanics. In Space Station 14, each player will take on the role of a completely normal worker inside the space station. What's fun is that there is always some problem to handle within the station itself, which will require either your or another crew member's attention. And when the problems start coming, so does the chaos. Surviving the different situations that can arise on a space station by working together with the other players will be your main goal. Players can customize their avatar's appearance by using a range of hairstyles, accessories, clothes, disguises, and so on. Despite this, whenever you enter a new space station, you will be assigned a job at random. This job will completely random and won't have anything to do with your character's appearance or previous experience. You can be assigned any role, from engineer to captain, traitor or even janitor. And, depending on the job you get, you will have to complete a series of certain tasks. Space Station 14 is an absolutely wild MMORPG whose most fun parts are the decision-making and interaction with other players. Inevitably, in each space station, there will come a point when you will have to make decisions that will affect the present and future of the station. And, during these moments, regardless of your character's role, you will feel like the true protagonist of the story.

Yliakum receives its light thanks to a huge crystal that reflects light inside it and acts as a sun. The first thing you will have to do in PlaneShift is to create a registered user account, and then create your character. You can choose between nine different races, among which you will find some of the most common ones in fantasy worlds: humans, dwarves, elves, etcetera. As usual, each race has its unique characteristics, which you can customize as you play. In fact, in PlaneShift, the character creation process has much more to offer than most traditional MMORPGs. Not only can you customize your avatar's appearance, but also other elements, such as how many siblings your character had during their childhood and other interesting details about their background. The game also encourages you to use a fantasy-sounding name so that it does not clash with the world of Yliakum. Once you have created your avatar, the adventure will begin. You will always start in the city of Hydlaa, where a brief tutorial will help you get familiar with some of the basic concepts of the game. In any case, the controls and gameplay are simple enough so that any experienced player will have no problem getting to grips with them quickly: almost all actions will be carried out with the mouse, while you can move your character with the arrow keys. PlaneShift is an MMORPG with an exciting backstory, story, and an enthusiastic and loyal player base. A remarkable title, that, although it does not feature a spectacular technical section, can offer you an experience quite close to the one you could get playing table role-playing with a group of friends.

New Eden is a multiplayer action role-playing game set in a spectacular universe that combines fantasy and science fiction. The story tells of how a cataclysm devastated the planet and completely altered its ecological balance, forcing mankind to live underground for generations. When they finally emerged from this forced exile, the world had changed radically, with alien technology and magic everywhere. This planet, once called Earth, is now known as Estaria. The first thing players have to do before starting a game is sign up. The registration process is very quick and easy, so you can have your user account ready in less than a minute. Once you have it, the next step is to create your avatar within the world of Estaria. You can choose between different sexes, as well as different shapes and colors for the body. All these adjustments, however, are purely aesthetic. In New Eden, all characters start from scratch, with the same skills and characteristics. Although New Eden is an MMORPG where you can interact with other players who are on the game servers at the same time as you, its main focus is combat. The game's combat system, reminiscent of titles like Hyper Light Drifter or even Dark Souls, is very dynamic and rewards players who are able to read their enemies' movements. You can block, dodge, and roll on the ground, but you'll need a lot of precision when carrying out any maneuver. As usual in most MMOs, you can't attack other players while you're on the normal game map. However, the game has PvP zones in which you can test your skills against other players from anywhere in the world. In these duels to the death, you can use all the weapons and equipment you've collected during your adventures: swords, spears, shotguns, spells, axes... Anything goes. New Eden is a spectacular MMORPG in every way, with accurate graphics that feature fluid and precise animations, plus a combat system that will delight fans of Soulslike. The game also has exciting lore and an old-school quest system, which encourages you to explore the world and discover it on your own instead of being guided step by step.

Castlevania Remade in Unreal

Castlevania Remade in Unreal is exactly as its name suggests: a recreation of the original Castlevania, the first of the saga, in Unreal Engine. As is expected, not all the game is completely reimagined in the new engine, but you can enjoy all the gameplay of the first Castlevania, with absolutely spectacular graphics, courtesy of one of the most visually stunning engines of our time. Because this is an unfinished version that may never be complete, Castlevania Remade in Unreal has no main menu, no options, or anything of the sort. As soon as you run the game, you will start directly outside Dracula's castle. The controls are very simple: with the arrow keys you can move Simon Belmont, with the space bar you can jump, with the 'e' key you can attack, and with the 'r' key you can use the secondary weapon. And that's it. With these controls you will have to try to defeat all the enemies that stand in your way. As mentioned at the beginning, Castlevania Remade in Unreal is not complete, but that does not mean that it has no content. The game features a handful of levels and even a couple of different bosses. In the same way, you will also be able to face many of the common enemies of the saga, and you will be able to use some of the most characteristic weapons, such as the knife, the axe or the cross, among others. You will also be able to upgrade Simon's whip, turning it into his mythical chain with a spiked ball at the end. Castlevania Remade in Unreal is a real treat for fans of the Castlevania saga, as it will allow them to enjoy the early stages of the first installment of the franchise, but with very detailed modern visuals. Of course, being faithful to the original work, the game is very difficult, so you better start playing with a good dose of patience, because you will probably need it.

You play the leader of a faction charged with protecting the barbarian city of Jorvik. That requires you to negotiate with other faction leaders, lead your men into battle, explore new lands, and solve the problems of your people. This means you're sometimes immersed in pure strategy, and other times find yourself inside a dungeon surrounded by enemies you have fight. The fun part about the game is that your actions, no matter what you do, always have consequences. If you make an enemy faction angry, you might end up going to war at the worst possible moment. But if you help an ally too much you might lose sight of the orcs ... which is clearly not a good idea. Depths of Peril is a highly entertaining game with a unique and addictive gameplay.
