Hammerwatch is a role and action game with a retro aesthetic that follows the basic premise of the classical Gauntlet. It also has certain elements that will remind the player of Magicka, and offers an experience full of dungeons, skeletons, swords, and spells for one, two, three, or four players. Our objective in the game is very simple: enter dungeons to kill anything that's moving and take all the treasure we can. You can carry out this complicated mission either alone—choosing one of the classes (warrior, rogue, magician)—or in a team with the help your friends. The dungeons are generated randomly, which means you'll never play the same round twice. Furthermore, you will find a large variety of traps, puzzles, and enemies, which will come in endless hoards to try and terminate your character. The game's graphics have a retro aesthetic that suits the game really well. Also, thanks to the animations and the fluidity of effects like magic or fire, the game never seems old-fashioned, just classy. Hammerwatch is a very entertaining game that takes a rather old production like Gauntlet and turns it into a very entertaining and modern videogame that you can enjoy just as much on your own as well as with a few friends.

Legends of Yore is a role playing game, in the roguelike sub-genre, in which you can go deep into different dungeons, and kill all the enemies that you see while you get all the treasure that you can find. Just the usual stuff. The developers of Legends of Yore themselves have defined it as a casual roguelike, which would normally be absurd and contradictory, but seems to be pretty accurate in this case. This is because, apart from the usual difficulties in the genre, you can also find some elements that make it easier. Basically, Legends of Yore can be controlled almost exclusively with the mouse, and when you die, instead of losing the character as usual, you can simply choose to lose some experience or objects in your inventory and keep going. Legends of Yore is a really entertaining roguelike. Although it has pixelated graphics with no animations (characters move without gesturing), it's still appealing thanks to an addictive and slightly more permissive gameplay than the norm.

Linley's Dungeon Crawl is a traditional roguelike that follows in the footsteps of genre classics like Hack and Moria to offer a new adventure. Here, you have to delve into the depths of a dungeon to find the Orb of Zot. The problem, as with many roguelikes, is that once you find it ... you also have to get out. One of the first things you'll notice in Linley's Dungeon Crawl is the large number of playable races and classes. You can play as a human, elf, dwarf, troll, orc, or ogre, among others. Each race also has a series of special classes. For example, the trolls can be either warriors or berserkers. Linley's Dungeon Crawl is exactly what you'd expect from a game of this style: randomly generated settings, permadeath, and turn-based combat, all of which make for an extremely unforgiving game. All of this is behind a rather complicated interface that might take a bit of patience to learn if you're new to the genre. Linley's Dungeon Crawl is a great traditional roguelike that can offer a real adventure for anyone looking for a different challenge than what most games offer these days.

Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup is a continuation of the awesome Dungeon Crawl, a modern roguelike game inspired by classics like Moria and NetHack. In this game, just like in the original Dungeon Crawl, you'll be able to choose from among lots of different races and classes when you create your character: semi-gods, nagas, magic ogres, orcs, trolls, humans, wood elfs, dwarves. You can choose from a lot of different races and archetypes of different characters. The biggest difference between Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup and the game that inspired it is that it has a much more accessible interface. You can still control it in the same way as traditional roguelike games, but it also incorporates the full use of the mouse and this lets you carry out some actions in a more intuitive way. The rest of the aspects of Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup are just like you would want them: perfect turn fights, the traditional permanent death of your character, an excellent magic system, an incredible amount of enemies and traps and a simple story line that lets you run through dungeons for hours. Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup has won a ton of prizes at festivals for roguelike games, and with good reason: it's excellent. At first, it might be a little difficult for those who are new to the genre, but once you understand the basics of the game it will end up being an excellent experience.

The Quest is a first-person RPG with a gameplay and aesthetic reminiscent of early 90s RPGs like Might and Magic IV and TES: Arena. As you play, you become immersed in an elaborate story full of danger. At the beginning of The Quest, you create a character by choosing different characteristics, such as race and class. These decisions are quite important, as what you choose will affect the way other characters respond to your actions. The game, like most games in this genre, takes place in a huge world that you can explore freely. You can go to one city or another, explore dungeons, or visit a witch's house. What you do will directly affect the story. You'll also have to react to situations differently depending on your character. With a warrior, for example, it's best to attack the enemy, but if you're a thief, it may be better to hide. The Quest is an elaborate RPG. The main story can take more than 20 hours to complete, and if you want to explore absolutely everything, it may take as long as 40 hours or more.

Sewerjacks is a very odd roguelike where, instead of playing any old adventurer (a warrior, thief, or magician), you'll control a Bloodbowl player (the Warhammer universe's fictional sport) who's fallen from grace and has to make a living in the city's sewers. At the beginning of the adventure, you can pick which type of character you want. You'll have several races to choose from, like human, orc, elf, or dwarf. That said, you won't have traditional classes, but others like 'front row player,' 'pitcher,' etc. Due to your character's nature, during your adventure in the sewers you can do things like kicking objects (as if they were balls) or jumping over creatures and objects (something you can only do with the corresponding skill). The system of rules, while not identical, is inspired by the classic Warhammer game, meaning it will look familiar to anyone who's played a quick round in one of those games of miniatures. Sewerjacks is an RPG that's completely different from what many people are used to. Although it doesn't have very good graphics, it presents a very distinct gaming experience, which is something that's always appreciated.

NetHack - Falcon's Eye is a remake of the classic roguelike game NetHack. The original's isometric-perspective ASCII graphics have been replaced by some much more attractive graphics that look even better from a top down perspective. But more than just the visuals of the game have had a makeover. Its interface is now adapted so that you can play with your mouse, which wasn't possible in the original version. You can also use the keyboard if need be, but it's strictly optional. Otherwise, NetHack - Falcon's Eye is identical to its original and offers a similar experience: descending into dungeons full of dangers capable of finishing off your character in mere seconds. Your objective, of course, is to recover the Amulet of Yendor. NetHack - Falcon's Eye is one of the best ways to enjoy this famous role-playing game today.

Last Scenario is, in proper Super Nintendo style, an RPG with a turn-based combat system where you play Hilbert, a normal everyday kid who turns into an authentic hero overnight. The game's story revolves around a global conflict that affects the entire continent where the characters live. However, as is frequently the case in this genre, you'll soon realize that the script is rather secondary. Although it has certain strokes of originality, Last Scenario is very predictable most of the time. However, the combat system, despite being traditional and turn-based, offers something a little more complex. Thanks to the possibility of deploying skills cards, you can customize the strategies of your group of adventurers before any battle. Last Scenario is an old-school JRPG with a script that could be better (but is still interesting) and a very fun combat system. On top of all this, Last Scenario includes a card game with which you can challenge citizens from different villages.

Holyspirit is a 3D role-playing game from a top-down point of view, which you may find pretty similar to the legendary Diablo, both in gameplay and in style. The story behind Holyspirit is a dark medieval fantasy, a place where the balance between good and evil had been maintained since time immemorial - until evil decided to upset that balance, leaving it up to you, the player, to restore. You have two different classes to choose between at the beginning of the adventure. Depending on what you choose, you'll have to change your form to face each situation, since where one has certain advantages... the other not so much. As you progress through the game story, you'll battle more than twenty types of enemies. They're just skeletons and zombies to start, but as you continue and gain more experience, you'll need to get ready to face off against all kinds of demons. Visually, Holyspirit is very similar to Diablo, to the point that sometimes it's hard to tell which game you're actually playing. Holyspirit is an independently-made role-playing game that is both fun and difficult, and should especially please any fans of the original Diablo.

Although Dark Disciples I is a traditional RPG and has a complex turn-based combat system, the main focus is on solving puzzles, interacting with the setting, and talking to other characters. Super Pokemon Evee Edition is a turn-based combat role-playing game that combines some of the best elements of the genre's two most important franchises: Pokemon and Final Fantasy. The game is set in the world of Pokemon, three years after the hero from the first game was proclaimed champion of the Pokemon League. Your hero, who starts the adventure without any Pokemon, doesn't get far before finding a very special Evee, who has the ability to change its evolution at will. Now, although the game is set in the Pokemon universe and uses the same graphics, its combat system is much more similar to Final Fantasy. Combats use the famous 'active time battle system' seen in the Final Fantasy saga up to the era of Playstation 2. So, you can have up to four Pokemon fighting simultaneously against your enemies, including of course the powerful Evee, along with three others that you obtain. In the world of Super Pokemon Evee Edition, you don't catch Pokemon in the traditional way (using pokeballs), rather you obtain them by defeating a corrupted version of the Pokemon, or another character gives one to you. Super Pokemon Evee Edition is the perfect mix between the Pokemon and Final Fantasy universes. Not only does it have a interesting storyline and many hours of gameplay, but it also includes an achievement system and various secondary missions to keep you busy.

Black Ice, in the words of its developer, is the result of mixing the gameplay of Borderlands with the aesthetic of Tron. And that's exactly it: a first-person role-playing and shooting game where you have to hack computer systems and beat back enemies in equal measures. Gameplay is simple: you hack systems according to your level, with the goal of annihilating any and all viruses living inside. To do that, you'll need to make use of a good arsenal of weapons and, above all, your multiple abilities. The more enemies you kill, the more experience you earn - experience that you can use to raise your character's level. Like in any RPG, when you gain levels you can choose which abilities and attributes you want to improve. It's an important decision, and one that will determine your character's style. Black Ice is set in an open world with a cyberpunk aesthetic, where you need to try to hack any system that you can see. Of course, getting yourself involved with a system that's above your pay grade will almost certainly result in your death. Black Ice is an excellent first-person action and role-playing game, with surprisingly deep gameplay. And in addition to everything else, it has great graphics and a fantastic (Tron-styled) soundtrack.

As you start using your characters, they can be upgraded, and their battle skills can be enhanced. Plus, you can also improve their features through their skill tree of professions. For example, an acolyte character can, later on, become a cleric. As with other Asian MMORPGs, the game's basic premise is to complete consecutive individual missions, although you can also participate in group missions with up to six other team members. Ultima Ratio Regum is a very special roguelike where the main focus is not combat or traps, as with the majority of other games in this genre. Instead, you'll be tasked with finding evidence scattered around the world in order to uncover an intellectual conspiracy to rewrite the history of mankind, from religion and customs to types of government and more. When you start a new game, Ultima Ratio Regum begins by generating a whole universe. Basically, the game generates an entire galaxy, planets and all. Then you choose the planet where you want to play. You can indicate certain preferences for your planet, such as the preferred type of government, culture, religious beliefs, and legal system. Or, if you prefer, you can randomize it. Once you've created the world, you can start playing. In the beginning, as in most roguelikes, the game might be a little confusing. Luckily, Ultima Ratio Regum includes a sort of built-in tutorial that explains all the controls available to you in each moment. No matter what, from the beginning, you can move around the world freely and begin your investigation. Ultima Ratio Regum is a totally unique roguelike with an ambitious premise. Median XL is a mod for Diablo II that significantly alters the gameplay experience, changing some of the weaker aspects of the original title and adding a lot of new content, especially during its final stretch. The mod even includes several improvements, such as higher resolutions, support for D2DX (another popular mod), general interface improvements and lots of new keyboard shortcuts. It is worth noting that to play Median XL you will first need to have Diablo II and its expansion, Lord of Destruction, installed. Fortunately, it is very easy to buy the original game directly from the official website of its creators, at a very affordable price. Note that this mod is for classic Diablo II, not for the more recent Diablo II Resurrected, with which the mod is incompatible. One of the most striking aspects of Median XL, especially for veterans who have already played the original Diablo II on more than one occasion, is the inclusion of new skill trees. Each of the game's classes, from the barbarian to the necromancer and the amazon, have a lot of new skills that, when combined, will give you the possibility of creating totally unique builds. All these skills, of course, have their own icon and, in some cases, with completely new and spectacular effects. In addition to new skills, as it could not be otherwise, the mod also adds thousands of new items and relics that you can get from chests, killing enemies or crafting them. And here is where we find another of the most striking changes of the mod: its new crafting system. Thanks to this interesting new feature, you will be able to define the statistics you want to improve within each object thanks to the Mystic Orbs. You will also be able to customize your equipment as never before. As if all these improvements were not enough, Median XL adds completely new regions to the game. You will be able to visit new realms of Hell, as well as new devastated cities, all of them from the original game lore (such as Duncraig or Toraja). In addition, many of these new areas will become especially important during the final stretch, which has been greatly expanded with fifty additional missions and several new bosses. Median XL is an absolutely spectacular mod for Diablo II that manages to do something that in the 2000s probably seemed impossible: improve and expand one of the best ARPGs in history. The mod also has a colossal and very active online community, with numerous servers located on different continents, where special events are held from time to time. A real gift for fans of this Blizzard classic, who should not wait a second longer to download it.

Veloren is an open source voxel RPG that, in the words of its own developers, was inspired by titles such as Cube World, Minecraft, Dwarf Fortress, and Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. The game is mainly focused on online play and includes a large community of players, although you can also play offline to explore the world by yourself, at your own pace and without having to interact with anyone else. Regardless, the first thing you have to do when you start playing Veloren is create a character. You can choose between six different races: humans, orcs, dwarves, elves, the undead, and danaris. It's important to note that this choice is purely cosmetic, as none of them have any limitations or special abilities of any kind. During character creation, you can also choose which weapon you want to start with, as well as different hairstyles and eye types. Once your avatar is ready and you've given it a name, you can enter the virtual world of Veloren. You'll always start in the same village, which is also the location of your original respawn point, otherwise known as the place you return every time your character dies. That said, you can also generate your own world using a new seed, which is easy to do but can be very time consuming (especially depending on the power of your PC). As usual for games in this genre, in Veloren, you'll have total freedom to move around the world: you can climb mountains, dive in rivers, explore forests, travel through villages, and so on. During your adventures, you'll encounter all kinds of creatures. In the villages, you can talk to the villagers, who are mostly friendly and will want to trade with you; outside the villages, on the other hand, you'll encounter all kinds of beasts and enemies eager to kill you. Fortunately, the game has a very deep combat system that requires some skill but is also tremendously fun. Another element required by any self-respecting open world game is crafting. As long as you have the right materials and are near a suitable workstation, you can create all kinds of useful objects. On an anvil, for example, you can forge weapons and armor if you have some metal in your inventory. On the other hand, if you're near a pot and you have meat, you can cook it, which makes its healing effects much more effective. Veloren is an outstanding open world role-playing game that holds its own when it comes to the vast majority of commercial titles belonging to the same genre. It's a beautiful project with around 20 active developers that has also received contributions from more than 150 people, including artists from many different disciplines.

The Spirit Engine 2 is a two dimensional role playing game set in an original fantasy world created by it's developer, which is outstanding in many aspects. The first of those is it's playability, as throughout the adventure you move your characters through scenarios in two dimensions, something that will prove especially relevant during battles, where you will simply have to determine the attack patterns of your group, and they will carry out the actions by turn. Isometric HeroQuest is an RPG based on the legendary HeroQuest board game. In this game, you choose one of the original four heroes and begin an epic adventure through dangerous dungeons. You can choose between a dwarf, elf, barbarian, and wizard. Each character has its own powers and spells that you can choose at the beginning of the game, and you'll have to adapt your strategy to whichever character you pick. It's not a brilliant idea to use direct attacks if you've chosen the wizard, for example. Once you start playing, you'll realize the gameplay is very similar to the board game: you throw the dice to see how many squares you move, and if you run into an enemy, you can attack. Both your attack and the enemy's defense will also be determined by the dice. Visually speaking, Isometric HeroQuest is a very basic game. This doesn't mean that the graphics are terrible, but they are definitely outdated. Isometric HeroQuest is a fun RPG that, for some, will bring back a certain kind of nostalgia. Ideal for lovers of the original HeroQuest.

The UnReal World is an extraordinary role-playing game where, instead of being set in an epic fantasy world with dragons, manticores and dark warriors, it is set in the middle of Finland during the Iron Age. The game mechanics are very similar to those of the traditional 'roguelike' games: your primary objective is to survive, even though the only way to really end the game is to die. Even so, The UnReal World is special, because you can play however you want. In The UnReal World, the players can choose what they want their character to do: fisherman, trader, hunter, potter, explorer... the possibilities are endless for each type of character. Also, rather than have 'classes' of characters, you will find a long list of skills that you can hone that will allow you to perform different actions. One of the most striking aspects of The UnReal World is that, aside from its impressive retro graphics, the game uses photos of real people (the developers themselves) to illustrate some of the more important moments in the game. The UnReal World is a fantastic role-playing and survival game that has literally thousands of possibilities, since scenes are generated randomly every time you start a game.
